EITC 2026: Everything You Need to Know About the Credit and Your Refund

The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) remains one of the most valuable federal tax breaks available to lower- and moderate-income workers in 2026.

Unlike a nonrefundable credit, the EITC is refundable, meaning an eligible taxpayer can potentially receive money back even if the credit reduces their federal income tax liability to zero.

For the 2026 tax year, the maximum EITC has increased because of inflation adjustments. The biggest possible credit is $8,231 for taxpayers with three or more qualifying children.

The maximum is $7,316 for two qualifying children, $4,427 for one qualifying child and $664 for workers who do not have qualifying children.

However, those figures are maximums rather than automatic payments. The amount a person actually receives depends heavily on their earned income, filing status and family circumstances.

How much money can you get?

The maximum credit depends on how many qualifying children you have:

Qualifying children Maximum EITC (2026)
3 or more $8,231
2 $7,316
1 $4,427
0 $664

These are the highest possible amounts. Your actual credit could be smaller depending on your income and filing status.

Who qualifies?

You must have earned income from work (wages, salaries, tips, or self-employment). You also must meet income limits, which vary by filing status and number of children. For 2026, the income limits are roughly:

Qualifying children Single / Head of Household limit Married filing jointly limit
0 $19,540 $26,820
1 $51,593 $58,863
2 $58,629 $65,899
3 or more $62,974 $70,244

Your investment income must also be $12,200 or less for the year.

When will you get your refund?

If you claim the EITC, federal law requires the IRS to hold your entire refund until at least mid-February. This is because of the PATH Act.

  • If you file early (January or early February) and choose direct deposit, you can generally expect your refund by the first week of March.

  • Paper returns take longer.

  • You can track your refund using the IRS Where's My Refund? tool.

How to claim it

You must file a federal tax return (Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR). If you have a qualifying child, you also need to fill out Schedule EIC.

Some states offer their own EITC on top of the federal credit, so check your state's rules as well.

Remember: the maximum amount is not guaranteed. Use the IRS EITC Assistant or a tax calculator to estimate what you might receive based on your specific situation.
